How to set up a VPN on a Keenetic router

A VPN on the router covers every device at home, including those that cannot run an app: TV, set-top box, smart speaker. Keenetic routers have a built-in OpenVPN client for this.

What you need

• A Keenetic router with an up-to-date KeeneticOS.
• A Router device in your FreeConVpn account and its downloaded OpenVPN file (button on the device card).

1. Install the OpenVPN component

In the router web interface open General settings → Change component set and tick OpenVPN client and server. Save — the router downloads the component and reboots.

2. Add the connection

1. Open Internet → Other connections.
2. In VPN connections press Add connection.
3. Type OpenVPN, any name such as FreeConVpn.
4. Paste the contents of the downloaded file into the configuration field or upload it.
5. Save and turn the connection on.

3. Check

From any device on the home network open ifconfig.me: the address should change to the server address.

Routing only some devices

KeeneticOS connection priorities let you send only selected devices through the VPN and keep the rest on the regular internet. Handy if only the TV needs the VPN.

Common issues

• The connection does not come up — make sure the whole file was pasted, first line to last.
• Slow — OpenVPN on a router is limited by its CPU. For phones and computers, apps with Hysteria2 are faster.
• Stopped working — download the file again after changing the server in your account: the old one is no longer valid.
